# Memory

> Kombai saves your preferences, build and test quirks, and project facts as memories, and recalls them in later chats in the same project.

Memory lets Kombai remember your preferences, build and test quirks, and project facts across chats in a project, so you don't have to repeat them in every new chat. Memory is on by default and is available in both the desktop app and the IDE extension.

## Memory in chat

When Kombai uses its memory during a chat, a row appears in the chat with the memory's name:

* **Recalled memory**: Kombai read a saved memory.
* **Created memory**: Kombai saved a new memory.
* **Updated memory**: Kombai changed a saved memory.
* **Deleted memory**: Kombai removed a saved memory.

## Review and delete memories

1. Open the [Settings](/account/settings) page.
2. Select the **Memory** tab. It lists the memories saved for the open project, with each memory's name, type, description, and when it was last updated.
3. Click a memory to open and edit it, or hover over it and click the <Icon icon="trash-can" size={16} /> icon to remove it.

## Turn memory on or off

In the **Memory** tab of [Settings](/account/settings), use the **Auto memory** toggle to turn memory on or off. The setting applies at the project level and is shared by the desktop app and the IDE extension.

Turning **Auto memory** off stops Kombai from reading or writing memory in that project. Memories that are already saved are kept.
