Kombai can use your existing Claude Code or Codex subscription to perform your tasks. It uses the CLI installed on your machine, so you can run more tasks. It also helps keep costs down by making use of what you already pay for.

Before you start

Ensure you have the agent’s CLI installed and meet at least the minimum version listed below.
Sometimes, Kombai can’t run a local agent because the CLI isn’t installed, is too old, or the operating system refused to start it. The agent row in the Model dropdown shows a status label to indicate the problem. If you see one of these labels, hover over the agent row. A hover card explains the problem, provides the command to fix it, and links to the provider’s guide.

Open the Model dropdown

Click the Model dropdown in Kombai’s chat window.

Select the agent and model

Under Local Agents, hover over the agent you want to use. Then, select the exact model and thinking effort you want for your tasks.

Switch between Claude Code, Codex, and the Kombai Agent in a single chat

Kombai lets you switch between Claude Code, Codex, and the Kombai Agent in the same chat. You can switch to continue a task with another agent or compare responses from different agents or models. You can also use different agents at different stages of a task. For example, you might design with the Kombai Agent, implement it with Claude Code, and review the implementation with Codex. Within the Kombai Agent, you can select an individual model or a Model Router as your requirements change. Kombai provides the selected agent with the prior conversation and records of tool results and file changes, so it can build on the work already done. You can switch back to an earlier agent after others have contributed. To switch, open the Model dropdown and select another agent, model, or model router from Kombai for your next message.
