The Settings page is a central hub to manage Kombai settings and access key features. It groups its pages under Context (Tech Stack, Context Graphs, Memory, and Rules, Commands & Skills), Connections (External MCP Servers, Kombai Browser, and, on the desktop app, Kombai MCP Server), and Preferences (General, Design Mode, and, Worktrees for the desktop app), along with links to external resources like Support and Docs.

Settings Tabs

To open the Settings page, click the icon in Kombai’s top menubar. When the Settings page is wide enough, its tabs appear in a sidebar; otherwise they appear as a row of tabs above the page.

Context

The Tech Stack page lets you define the libraries and frameworks used in your repo. Learn more in the Tech Stack overview.
The Context Graphs page lets you manage how Kombai indexes and understands your codebase. See Context Graphs for details.
The Memory page lets you turn Auto memory on or off for the open project and review or delete the memories Kombai has saved. See Memory for details.
The Rules, Commands & Skills page lets you manage custom instructions, automation workflows, and reusable skills. Each has an Individual sub-tab for your own and project-level items, and a Team sub-tab for sharing across your team. See Rules, Commands, and Agent Skills for details.

Connections

The External MCP Servers page lets you configure Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers to connect Kombai with external tools and data sources. See External MCP Servers for details.
  • Default browser (desktop only): Where a chat’s browser opens until you pick one for that chat: New Tab opens pages as tabs in the chat, and External Browser opens a separate Chrome window. The agent uses the browser its chat uses. (New Tab by default) See Set the default browser.
  • Agent can use Browser: When enabled, the agent can use the browser to navigate web pages and interact with them whenever required. (Enabled by default)
  • Test Connection: Check that the Kombai browser is configured and working correctly.
  • Browsing data (desktop only): History and Download history open the in-app browser’s visited pages and downloaded files. Next to Clear browsing data, click Clear… to choose which of browsing history, download history, and cookies and site data to remove.
  • Profiles & Session Sync: Import sessions and cookies from your local Google Chrome profiles to bypass logins. Available on macOS only. Before your profiles are listed, click Allow next to Chrome profiles to let Kombai read them; macOS may ask you to allow this. If macOS blocks access, the desktop app shows a Full Disk Access row: click Allow and follow the guide to turn it on in System Settings. See Import cookies from Chrome profiles.

The Kombai MCP Server page lets external coding agents like Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex connect to Kombai to start chats and read canvases from outside the app. See Kombai MCP Server for details.

Preferences

Use the General settings page to configure command approvals, thread compaction, and notifications.
  • Command approval: Choose how Kombai handles approval before running terminal commands. You can also change it from the chat input: type / and open the Shell permissions submenu.
    • Ask Every Time: Ask for approval before each command. Commands Kombai verifies as read-only run without asking.
    • Auto-approve for me (default): A classifier reviews each command for safety and intent. Approved commands run automatically; everything else asks you.
    • Bypass permissions: Run every command without asking for approval.
  • Use generate assets: Let Kombai add AI-generated images and videos to designs. Choose Auto (default) to have Kombai add them automatically, or Never to generate assets only after you ask and confirm.
  • While the agent is working: Choose what happens to a message you send while Kombai is still responding. Queue (default) holds it until the agent finishes; Steer adds it to the task in progress.
  • Auto compact threads: Automatically summarize long conversation histories to optimize context usage and improve response speed. (Enabled by default)
  • Response notifications: Alerts you when Kombai finishes a response or needs input while you are working in another window or tab. Clicking a notification brings you back to the chat. (Enabled by default) In the desktop app, the notification shows Kombai — followed by the chat’s title, with Response ready or Needs your input. On macOS, the first time you use the app, Kombai shows a Kombai notifications are on notification so that macOS asks for notification permission while you’re there to allow it.
macOS Note: If you previously dismissed the initial macOS permission prompt, notifications will not appear even if enabled here. Re-enable them in System Settings > Notifications > Kombai, or click the notification settings link under the setting.
The following settings are available only in the desktop app:Theme: Changes the appearance of Kombai. The Auto modern, Auto +, and Auto 2026 options follow your system’s light or dark setting. You can also pick a fixed theme: Dark Modern, Dark+, Dark 2026, Light Modern, Light+, Light 2026, Monokai, Monokai Dimmed, Solarized Light, or Tomorrow Night Blue. The default is Auto 2026. The same list is in View > Theme in the menu bar.Launch at login: Automatically opens Kombai when you sign in to your computer (macOS, Windows, and Linux). Kombai turns this on the first time it launches; turn it off here if you don’t want it.
If your computer is managed by an administrator or restricts startup applications, turning on Launch at login will automatically switch off if the setting cannot take effect.
Clear browser cookies and site data: Signs you out of sites in the in-app browser and deletes the cookies you imported from Chrome. See Sign-ins and cookies.
The Design Mode page includes the High creativity setting. Turn it on to generate highly creative designs with a bias towards complex animations. It is best suited to landing pages and hero sections that need to stand out.
Designs generated with High creativity open in a browser-sized view on the canvas. Scroll inside the browser-sized view to see the full content and its animations.
The Design Mode page also includes the Canvas dot grid setting, which shows a dotted grid behind your designs on the canvas. Turn it off for a plain background. (Enabled by default)In the IDE extension, the Design Mode page also includes Open canvas in browser, which opens your design canvas files in the Kombai Browser instead of the editor. (Disabled by default)
Manage worktree chats:
  • the location new worktrees are created in
  • the branch prefix Kombai uses
  • what happens when a worktree’s last chat closes
  • whether to copy installed dependencies into new worktrees
  • the list of worktrees for the current project.
Worktrees are available only in the desktop app.
